Galungan & Kuningan: A Sacred Celebration

Galungan & Kuningan: A Sacred Celebration

The sacred celebration of Hari Raya Galungan will illuminate Bali on two auspicious dates: Wednesday, February 28th, and Wednesday, September 25th. Galungan is a deeply spiritual time when the Balinese people honor the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil) and reconnect with their ancestors through prayers, offerings, and the nurturing rhythm of ritual.

The essence of Galungan begins three days prior, when the island comes alive with devotion and preparation. The air fills with the scent of coconut and unripe bananas as offerings are carefully crafted to honor the divine. Penjors, the towering bamboo poles adorned with palm leaves, fruits, and rice, are raised in front of each home, symbolizing prosperity, gratitude, and protection. These decorations, rooted in ancient tradition, reflect Bali’s connection to nature and the cosmos, aligning with the rhythm of the earth and sky.

As the dawn of Buda Kliwon Dungulan arrives, families gather to present their offerings and visit temples, their hearts full of reverence for the gods and ancestors who guide their journey. It is a time of togetherness, reflection, and renewal—a moment when the natural world and the spiritual world dance in harmony.

During the 10 days between Galungan and Kuningan, the gods are said to reside within the temples, blessing the land and its people. It is a period of deep contemplation and connection, as Balinese families extend their celebrations, visiting loved ones, sharing meals, and offering thanks for the abundance that nature provides.

At Alam Farma, we embrace the values of balance, respect for nature, and spiritual well-being that resonate so deeply with Galungan. Like the rituals of this sacred holiday, our approach is rooted in honouring the earth and nurturing the body and spirit in harmony with the natural world.
